How to Prepare for a Hurricane
There are many things you can do to prepare for a hurricane, here a few to help you out.
1. Store food and Water - You need to have a small amount of food and water. Water might not be potable in the time that you maybee stuck on your premisise. You might have to deal with flood waters that can contaminate your drinking water so it is very important to have ample supply. You will also need food, you will want to pick food that has a long shelf life. There are some places that sell MRE's (Meal Ready to Eat) that have around a 3 year shelf life. Make sure if you have saved canned and other items for your food supply that you go through them each year so that you keep a "fresh" supply. (Tip: Also note that your hot water heater is a water storage tank in itself. Shut off the power to the tank to prevent damage upon the electric coming back on. Open any hot water valve in the house to take the vaccum off of the hot water line, then you will be able to open the valve on the tank to use the water!)
2. Emergency Prepardness Pack - Keep an emergency prepardness kit in your safe place. Keeping one of these packs will lessen the amount of things that you may have to scrape around for during a time of caos. You need to have a flashlight, extra batteries, maybee a noaa weather radio, small amount of tools(multitool), water purification tablets, lightsticks, biohazard bags(for waste disposal), notepad with a pen, thermal blanket, and maybee even a respirator. (all the things above are only a suggestion, in your situation you need to tailor an emergency preparedness pack to your own needs. You maybee can even purchase one through a retailer)
3. First Aid Kit - You will also need a first aid kit. Keep one of these incase of injury during a hurricane. Keep a minimum of some bandages, Dressings, Injury Treatments, Antiseptics and Topicals, and Medicines. (Make sure you have enough prescription medicine also in case you are unable to reach a pharmacy in an event)
4. Family and Friends - In the event of an hurricane you may have to evacuate your dwellings, in this event you will have to stay in touch with family and friends just in case you will need to stay with them. Also it is a good idea to make a plan incase you may need to help a family member of friend.
5. Your immediate Family Plan - Plan for things like a hurricane! Get together with your family that live with you and plan out and practice the steps that you will take incase of an emergency. Plan evacuation strategy, plan on what you will have to do incase you are contained to your home, and also plan on were you will go when an hurricane hits
6. Life Kit - Put together a kit that has all of your important information in it. Just incase you have evacuated this is something you can grab on your way out. This kit will have all of your insurance documents, titles to your cars, and any type of important document that will help you get back on your feet after a hurricane situation.
I will add to the above list as I update this site, please check back often for updates to this page!
note: - all of the above are all suggestions, when planning for any disaster you need to tailor your prepardness for your specific needs
